Building Self Esteem

By Amanda Venus Abdelrahman

“Everything that happens to you is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. We cannot outperform our level of self-esteem! We cannot draw to ourselves more than we think we are worth!" – Iyanla Vanzant

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy." – Norman Vincent Peale

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection” – Sharon Salzberg

Even people who seem to be very confident will admit to having low self-esteem, a feeling that hinders them from initiating and following through with things they'd most like to do and achieve. Low self esteem can even cause people to behave in a self destructive manner. Self esteem can be a big factor in the quality of one's life!

Low self-esteem is a negative evaluation of oneself. This usually happens when we experience some event or circumstance in life that we felt sensitive to, which sometimes causes us to internalize negative thoughts about ourselves. We personalize the incident and experience some kind of deep mental/emotional/physical scar, which then begins to stain through many aspects of our lives. Some of us respond by acting in a self-defeating or self-destructive manner.

"When that happens, our actions tend to be automatic and impulse-driven; we feel upset or emotionally blocked; our thinking narrows; our self-care deteriorates; we lose our sense of self; we focus on being in control and become self-absorbed. You can build your self-esteem if you take very good care of yourself!" – Stanley J. Gross

So now we can acknowledge the importance and need for building and maintaining a higher sense of self esteem, and the significance that has in working toward achieving many life goals!

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR INCREASING SELF ESTEEM:
